Getting started
How do I open an account?
Go to Start free. Enter your email and choose Continue with Email. We send you a link; open it and your wallet is ready. There is no password. The account is free, and it starts with 10,000 Sandbox NSH to try things out.
The sign-in email did not arrive.
Check your spam or promotions folder, then choose Resend on the sign-in page. Each link works once and expires after 20 minutes, so always use the newest one.
What are Sandbox and Live?
Use the switch at the top of your wallet. Sandbox uses practice money so you can try adding, sending, and taking payments safely. Live is real money and needs you to verify once.
Why do I need to verify, and what does it cost?
Before live money moves, you confirm the name on the account and your country, once. It is free. Until it is done, the wallet cannot add money, pay, or withdraw.
What is one Nuru Shilling worth?
100 Nuru Shillings equal 1 US dollar. The same rate is used when you buy, pay, get a refund, or sell back. 10 USD is 1,000 NSH. 18 USD is 1,800 NSH.
Who can use Nuru Shillings?
Anyone 18 or older, or the age of majority where they live if that is higher. Each person may hold one personal wallet.
Adding money and paying
How do I add money?
Open your wallet and choose Add money. Pay with PayPal, a supported card, or M-Pesa. The balance is available immediately.
Where can I spend Nuru Shillings?
On any platform that connects the Nuru API. You pay on that platform’s own page. You do not open a second account or leave the site.
Can a buyer pay without a Nuru balance?
Yes. A buyer without Nuru Shillings can pay with M-Pesa, PayPal, or a card on the same checkout.
A payment was refused. Was I charged?
No. A refused payment does not change your balance and has no fee. If you think it was refused in error, write to support with the payment id.
How do refunds work?
The company refunds with the original payment id. The full amount returns to the same wallet, at the same rate, and appears next to the original charge in your activity. Each payment can be refunded once.
Withdrawing
How do I withdraw?
Sell your balance back at 100 NSH to 1 USD and withdraw to PayPal, a supported card, or M-Pesa in your verified name. Nuru charges nothing to withdraw.
How long does a withdrawal take?
It starts when you submit it. Arrival time depends on the method you chose. If the method rejects it, the amount returns to your wallet.
Will PayPal, my card, or M-Pesa charge a fee?
They may, under their own terms. Those fees are not Nuru fees and Nuru does not collect them.
Privacy and security
Is my name shown when I pay?
No. Checkout shows the company name only. Your name is not shown to other buyers and the payment is not written to a public ledger. Records stay on Nuru’s private chain.
Does Nuru sell my information?
No. Nuru does not sell personal information and runs no advertising trackers. See the Privacy Notice.
Someone asked for my sign-in link or PIN. Is that Nuru?
No. Nuru never asks you to forward a sign-in link or to share your secret API key, M-Pesa PIN, or card security code. Do not reply, and write to supportnorashillings@benuru.com.
I think someone used my account.
Secure your email account first, because sign-in links go there. If you use Business tools, choose Replace key. Then write to support from the address on the account. Activity reported before it happens is not your responsibility.
For businesses
Do I need a registered company?
No. You give your business a name. Nuru records that name on its own servers, and it is the only name a checkout shows. Your personal name is not shown to buyers.
What kinds of sites can take payment?
Shops, services, subscriptions, marketplaces, apps, digital products, and adult sites. Nuru does not refuse a site because card networks refuse its category.
Fraud, money laundering, anything illegal where the buyer or the company is located, weapons, illegal drugs, stolen data, material that exploits children, unlicensed gambling, and pyramid schemes are not allowed. See Acceptable use.
What does it cost a business?
1% of each payment that is paid. Nothing to open, nothing monthly, nothing on a refused payment. On a refund the fee comes back. On 1,800 NSH the fee is 18 NSH and you receive 1,782 NSH.
For developers
How do I create a payment?
One request with the amount, the unit NSH, your reference, and the company name. The response returns a payment id and a status. See the Docs.
Which webhooks are sent?
payment.paid and payment.refunded, to the https URL you save in Business tools.
Is there a sandbox?
Yes. The sandbox and the test key are free and never move a live balance.
Where should the secret key live?
On your server only. Never put a live key in a page the buyer can read, and never email it to us.
Contact support
A person reads every message. Include the payment id if it is about a payment. Do not include a sign-in link or a secret key.
